March 8, 2024: Stumbling block laid in commemoration of the deportations

Ein Mann mit Cowboyhut kniet auf dem Boden und arbeitet an der Installation eines Stolpersteins. Um ihn herum stehen mehrere Personen, teilweise sichtbar, mit Blumen in den Händen.

On March 8, 2024, a stumbling block (“Stolperschwelle”) was laid at the entrance to the former Dresden-Neustadt freight yard, from where the deportation transports departed between 1942 and 1944, in memory of the deportation of people persecuted as Jews.

It bears the following inscription:

DRESDEN-NEUSTADT FREIGHT YARD
IN 1942 AND 1943,
HUNDREDS OF JEWISH RESIDENTS OF DRESDEN WERE DEPORTED FROM THIS PLACE, AMONG OTHER PLACES
TO THE GHETTO OF RIGA AND TO THE EXTERMINATION CAMP OF AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU.

The installation work was carried out by the artist Gunter Demnig himself. Around 100 Dresden residents were present, including numerous representatives of the city council parties and the Dresden Mayor for Culture, Annekatrin Klepsch.
