The Concept for memorial site has been published

An important step on the way to creating the Alter Leipziger Bahnhof memorial and meeting place

The Förderkreis Alter Leipziger Bahnhof (Alter Leipziger Bahnhof Support Group) has published the concept commissioned by the city of Dresden for the future memorial, educational, and meeting place on the site of the former Dresden-Neustadt freight station. The concept sets the basis for the further planning and implementation of the project, which the city of Dresden officially launched in 2023.

The focus is on developing the historic site into a memorial and meeting place dedicated to the history of Nazi deportations from Dresden and Saxony, while also creating an open space for cultural and social exchange.

The concept has three central pillars:

  • Memorial: Research, documentation, and presentation of the history of deportation, as well as the creation of a dedicated place for individual and collective remembrance.
  • Meeting place: An open space for exchange, contemporary Jewish culture, and the culture of other formerly persecuted groups—a “counterpoint” to exclusion and discrimination.
  • Presentation of transportation history: An additional area in the roundhouse links the history of the station with the ambivalence of technology, mobility, and modernity.

At the same time, the concept emphasizes inclusion, diversity, and participation: it involves civil society initiatives, representatives of former victim groups, and scientific expertise in its further development.

The planned facility is to be run by a private income foundation in which the city, state, and civil society participate.

The complete concept can now be viewed on the website:
