The history workshop “Dresden – Junction of Deportations” is a project of the Förderkreis Alter Leipziger Bahnhof. It focuses on the history of the Alter Leipziger Bahnhof as a site of Nazi crimes and deportations. Between April and November 2026, the workshop invites participants every two weeks to engage with historical sources, local sites of remembrance, and questions of memory culture.

At the center of the workshop is the Alter Leipziger Bahnhof as a key site of Nazi persecution in Dresden. During the Second World War, the grounds served as an important logistical hub for the Nazi war economy and as a point of departure and transit for numerous deportations. From here, Jews from Dresden and eastern Saxony, among others, were deported to ghettos, concentration camps, and extermination camps.

The history workshop sees itself as an open forum for research, exchange, and education. Historians, initiatives, artists, and civil society actors present projects, research findings, and source collections, and discuss them together with participants. The topics range from biographical research on deportations and forced labor to the exploration of local sites of remembrance. Some sessions take the form of guided walks to historical sites such as the former “Hellerberg Jewish Camp,” the Goehle-Werk, or the New Jewish Cemetery.

The history workshop builds on the goal of developing the Alter Leipziger Bahnhof into a vibrant place of remembrance, research, and encounter. The events are aimed at everyone interested in history, as well as students, researchers, initiatives, and members of civil society. New participants are welcome to join at any time.
